TRIBE RALLIES PAST FELLER FLOP, 8-5.
Cleveland, April 20 - The Cleveland Indians rallied three times before finally overtaking the St. Louis Browns in fifteen innings, 8-7, before a major league record Opening Day crowd of 73,163 at Municipal Stadium. The Tribe overcame an uncharacteristic poor start by Bob Feller who surrendered nine hits and five runs in one plus inning of work. Though Bob Lemon filled in admirably in relief of Feller, Cleveland could not push across a run against Fred Sanford through seven innings. In the eighth, Joe Gordon brought the crowd to its feet with a three-run home run. Three batters later, Jim Hegan belted the Tribe into a sudden tie before the elated record throng. Boudreau's troops rallied twice more in the ninth and tenth to draw the contest into further frames. In the 15th, Alllie Clark blooped the ball over Eddie Pellagrini with two outs to score Gordon with the game winner.

DUROCHER RETURNS; FLOCK TAKES GIANTS, 3-1.
New York, April 20 - The New York Giants gift-wrapped three runs for Leo Durocher and those Bums with two errors in the third inning as Rex Barney and Hugh Casey held on for a 3-1 Brooklyn win before an Opening Day crowd of 48,130 at the Polo Grounds. Miscues by second sacker Jack Conway and firstbaseman Johnny MIze opened the door allowing Billy Cox, acquired in the off-season from Pittsburgh in the Dixie Walker trade, and rookie Gil Hodges to score the first two runs for the Brooks. Twenty year old Preston Ward who took over for Jack Robinson at first base, added the final tally with a flyout scoring Arky Vaughan. New York put together a last gasp threat in the ninth after pinch hitter Johnny McCarthy tripled to open the frame. Fireman Casey retired Conway, and Whitey Lockman lined sharply to Robinson at second. Robinson speared the sphere, and fired to third where Cox slapped the tag on a startled McCarthy to end the contest.

News and Notes

  • Rip Sewell, blooper ball artist, coach until placed on active list prior to Bucs home opener, loses 7-3 to Chicago, though he struck out 8 Bruins. Phil Cavarretta drives in three as Russ Meyer goes the distance scattering ten hits but assisted greatly by five double plays from his infield.
  • At Shibe Park, Dutch Leonard outdueled Johnny Sain as the Quakers top the Braves, 3-0 before the second largest inaugural crowd of 22,913. Rookie Richie Ashburn collected two hits and scored a run in the first inning in his debut. Dick Sisler, acquired from St. Louis this spring for SS Ralph LaPointe and cash, missed the cycle by a home run, and drove in Ashburn with a triple in the first.

Welcome to my replay of the 1948 baseball season, a season that has been described outside the City of New York as one of the best ever! This is a continuation of my replay effort beginning with the 1946 season. All major league statistical references are from my 1946 and 1947 replays. This project uses Baseball for Windows by Miller Associates, Inc. For those familar with this software, I am using Cookie Lopez II as the micromanager and the season disk is a FPE imported disk with Bill Staffa's Merlin program. Actual lineups and transactions are used. Special thanks to Terry Simpkins for his assistance with this replay.
